Note: Walk over the bridge with my colleague Katie Brown in her guest post to understanding Christian Science as an effective means of health care.
The Christian Science method of treating disease is through prayer to God following the life and teachings of Jesus in the Bible. Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered Christian Science, wrote in her primary book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, “The physical healing of Christian Science results now, as in Jesus’ time, from the operation of divine Principle, before which sin and disease lose their reality in human consciousness and disappear as naturally and as necessarily as darkness gives place to light and sin to reformation (p. xi).”
To experience a healing of sickness in Christian Science is to experience a deeper sense of who you are as the spiritual image and likeness of God, rather than a material, biological being. It is to identify self with qualities of Spirit or God. The Bible says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance:…(Galatians 5).”
Over many generations, since the late 1800′s Christian Scientists throughout the world have experienced healing of sickness through acknowledging God or Mind as the only power, and matter as not a power. Mrs. Eddy declared, “A Christian Scientist’s medicine is Mind,…(Science and Health, p. 453).”
Combining Christian Science with traditional medicine doesn’t work, because they are two different forms of health care. Christian Science treatment focuses on a spiritual view of being, while traditional medicine focuses on the material body. Usually, a Christian Scientist’s first health care choice is to rely on prayer for healing, and generally, this results in no need to seek help from the medical community; however, there is no church requirement to avoid taking medicine or going to a doctor.
Christian Scientists believe it is never God’s will for people to suffer or die. The opposite is true. God’s will is to bring health, harmony, and wholeness to everyone’s lives. Christian Scientists compassionately want everyone to choose for themselves the health care that meets their human needs, as they choose the best possible care for themselves and their families.
Mrs. Eddy stated, “The theology of Christian Science includes healing the sick (Science and Health, p. 145).” Resources for healings of sickness, as well as life problems like employment, relationships, and supply, include the Bible and Science and Science and Health, Christian Science Sentinel, The Christian Science Journal
