Mother’s Day in Canada is celebrated on the same date and in much the same way as it is in other western countries, like the United States. It is always celebrated on the second Sunday in May.
This special Sunday is celebrated in various ways – a family brunch, flowers, a card, a phone call – all directed to the special ‘Mom’ in our lives. This is the busiest day of the year for restaurants!
When my Mother passed away, I was the one who went through all her personal belongings to sort out, distribute, donate or destroy. In the side drawer of her desk I found all the Mother’s Day cards that we 3 kids had ever made or sent her in our youth. It brought a smile to my face to see the childish drawings and verses, the handmade cards from various grades in school. These were treasured by her for years. Nothing worthy, however, of “Hallmark” quality!
Some humourous verses from various cards:
“I got all my good qualities
from you Mom.
Isn’t it lucky you had more
than enough for both of us?”
“I’m glad I’ve got you for a mother…
…some stranger wouldn’t have
put up with me this long.”
What are the qualities of a mother? The first one that comes to my mind is mother-love. It is constant and consistent.
The next quality would be dependability – Mom is always there for you – through good times or difficult ones.
But what about those people, like me, whose precious Mom has passed away? You can still acknowledge her and be grateful for all the qualities of motherhood she expressed. My Mom’s example of unselfish love in all that she did for the family and friends continues to be an inspiration in my life.
